Don't understand how the VPN works? Appears it has to be manually turn on, no instructions?

I am finding this program one that appears to be beneficial except for understanding why I cannot get Real Time protection even with all the advice from techies, nothing is working and I also have no idea what I'm being charged for. I expected this fee to cover everything advertised. Too much going on to get a full understanding and not end up paying for things I don't want.

This antivirus software has slowed my computer down considerably and I am not pleased. It's easy to use, does a pretty good job of protecting and notifying, but as stated, slows my computer. Won't uninstall, but won't renew either since I just got it in June 2019.
